Simple, Compound and Complex Rules and Examples

Simple sentence:

 1 subject + 1 finite verb.

Ex: Taking dinner, I went to bed.

Compound Sentence:

 a. Two clauses

b.  and, but, or in the middle

Exam: I took dinner and went to bed.

Complex sentence:

 Two clauses+ though/although/since/as/when/if/Unless/that/who/which/so that/so....that conjunctions in the beginning or middle.

Exam: Though she is beautiful, nobody wants to marry her.

Rule 1:  Despite/In spite of--------but--------though/although

Simple- Despite reading more, you cannot make a good result.

Compound- You read more but you cannot make a good result.

Complex: Though you read more, you cannot make a good result.

Rule2: to/in order to-------and want to------so that

 Simple-He worked hard in order to /to succeed in life.

Compound- He worked hard and wanted to succeed in life.

Complex-He worked hard so that he could succeed in life.

Simple- He studies more to be first in whole Bangladesh.

Compound- He studies more and wants to be first in whole Bangladesh.

Complex- He studies more so that he can be first in whole Bangladesh.

Rule 3:

3.By verb+ing

and

If +affirmative

 

Simple-By working hard, you can succeed.

Compound-Work hard and you can succeed.

Complex-If you work hard, you can succeed.

Rule-4. Without + verb+ing

or

If +negative/Unless

 

Simple- Without working hard, you cannot succeed in life.

Compound- Work hard or you cannot succeed in life.

Complex- If you do not work hard, you cannot succeed in life.

 

Rule-5.Too----------to

Very----and

So------that

 

Simple- He was too fat to move.

Compound- He was very fat and he could not move.

Complex-He was so fat that he could not move.

Rule-6:Verb+ing

and

When

 

Simple: Seeing her, I called her.

Compound: I saw her and called her.

Complex: When I saw her, I called her.

 

Rule-7:Because of

and so

since/as

 

Simple: He did not go to college because of his sickness.

Compound: He was sick and so he did not go to college.

Complex: Since he was sick, he did not go to college.

 

Rule-8:in,on, at, during

and

when

 

Simple: In spring, the cuckoo sings.

Compound: It is spring and the cuckoo sings.

Complex: When it is spring, the cuckoo sings.

 

 

Rule-9:who/which/that deleted+verb+ing(active voice)

and

Who,which,that

 

Simple: The authoress hired a cabin belonging to the orphanage.

Compound: The authoress hired a cabin and it belonged to the orphanage.

Complex: The authoress hired a cabin which belonged to the orphanage.

 

Rule-10:who/which/that deleted +verb 3(Passive voice)

and

who/which/that

Simple: The car made in Japan is very long lasting.

Compound: The car is made in Japan and it is very long lasting.

Complex: The car which is made in Japan is very long lasting.
