Completing Sentence and Proverbs

§      HSC Special Words and Phrases + Completing Sentence Rules:             5+10 = 15 Marks

1. First Conditional: If +Present Indefinite, Sub+will/can/may+verb1

Example: If he wants, I will help him.

2. Second Conditional: If +Past Indefinite, Sub+would/could/might+verb1

Example: If he wanted, I would help him.

3. Third Conditional: If +Past perfect, Sub+would have /could have/might have+verb3

Example: If he had wanted, I would have helped him.

4. It is high time + Sub+verb2

It is high time we removed corruption from the country.

5. Present tense +since+ Past indefinite

It is many years since I met him.

Many years have passed since I met him.

6. Past indefinite+ since + Past perfect

It was many years since I had met him.

7.Present Indefinite + as if/ as though + Past indefinite

Dulal is a quack. He behaves as if he were an MBBS doctor.

He talks as if he knew everything.

8. Past indefinite + as if/as though + past perfect

Dulal was a quack. He behaved as if he had been an MBBS doctor.

He talked as if he had known everything.

9. Would you mind+ verb+ ing?

Would you mind opening the door?

10. look forward to/with an eye to + verb+ing

I look forward to receiving your letter.

11. With a view to+ verb+ing

I went to market with a view to buying a pen.

12. Lest+Sub+should /might + verb1

Read more lest you might fail.

13. No sooner had------than + past ind

No sooner had the thief seen the police than he ran away.

14. Hardly/Scarcely had-----when + past ind

Hardly had the teacher entered the class when all the students stood up.

15. Past perfect + before+ past ind

The patient had died before the doctor came.

16. Past ind +after + Past perfect

The patient died after the doctor had come.

17. Would that + Sub+could+v1+ext!

Would that I could fly like a bird!

18. Let alone= not to mention/cannot be thought or imagined

I can’t afford a bicycle, let alone a car.

19. What if =hypothetical situations/worries/suggesting alternatives

What if it rains tomorrow?

What if we miss the train?

What if we try a different method?

20. What does look like= It tells the physical appearance of something

What does your car look like? Ans: It’s blue, small and shiny.

21. What is it like=It tells overall qualities or characteristics

What is your car like? Ans: It’s reliable and easy to drive.

22. would rather+ verb1+than

I would rather take coffee than tea.

23. had better +verb1

You had better study well.

24. have to/ has to + verb1

You have to work hard to stand first in Dhaka Board.

He has to go to college regularly.

25. Provided that, providing that= If

Provided that the weather is good, the plane will take off.

26. Unless= If not

You can’t succeed unless you work hard.

 

Proverbs:

1. The man who follows two hares catches neither.

2. Pride goes before a fall.

3. Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.

4. The wearer best knows where the shoe pinches.

5. A man is known by the company he keeps.

6. Danger often comes where danger is feared.
